3 Trends That Will Impact Funeral Homes And Cemeteries This Decade

May 11, 2020 5:49:06 PM / by Ryan Thogmartin

The world is in a much different place than it was ten years ago. Let's be honest, EVERYTHING changed massively just 9 weeks ago. Technology has progressed, the internet and COVID-19 have changed everything, and our global connection is shedding light on massive issues. So, what do the next ten years look like? How will your marketing need to shift in the next decade if you want to stay relevant at all?

1. People Are Still Getting Old

Baby boomers (the richest generation in history) will all be 65 or older by 2030. They will make up the majority of your pre-need and at-need volume. Boomer's large population and wealth have caused them to infiltrate and disrupt every field they've touched. Every space from cosmetics, to travel, and even retirement homes have been boomed by the boomers. Deathcare won't be any different.

How Does This Affect Your Marketing?

You'll need to be sure you're targeting the right audience. Also, boomers tend to be more experience-driven. They travel, take vacations, and seem to enjoy the finer things of life.Their number one reason for vacationing is to check off their bucket list alongside family and friends. They want to create lasting memories. Your brand needs to reflect celebrations and unique services rather than coming across as boring and softer than cotton covered marshmallows.

2. Transparency Is Vital

In this decade, whether you're an established owner, or an up and coming director, you'll be in the arrangement room with a lot more Millennials. They're no longer the "lost generation" out wandering trying to "find themselves." At the end of the decade, the same people who got stereotyped as unambitious-dreamers will make up the majority of the workforce, with the oldest of the bunch edging 50. They're going to become more active in your local community and be a big part of making arrangements for the boomers.

How Does This Affect Your Marketing?

Millennials value transparency over everything. They’ve grown up witnessing big scandals, hidden injustice, and don’t have much grace for people trying to cover anything up. Remember - this generation pioneered Facebook and Instagram where people post EVERYTHING. If you want to attract millennials, you need to pull back the curtain and intentionally engage with them.

3. Climate Care

The world as a whole is becoming more mindful of environmental impact. With 77% of people wanting to live more sustainably, the “eco-freaks” aren't the small minority they were 20 or 30 years ago - they’re the increasing majority.

It’s time to say goodbye to direct mail campaigns. Not only are these killing your budget - they’re killing mother earth. With great digital alternatives and improvements, you can come across as up-to-date and resourceful rather than wasteful.
